The purpose of this position is to work under the direct supervision of an assistant district attorney to evaluate criminal cases that come into the office and to represent the state in the resolution of the case via dismissal, plea negotiations, or trial.

Essential Duties:

The following duties are normal for this position under the direct supervision of an Assistant District Attorney. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. All functions may not be performed in all legal departments. Other duties may be required and assigned.

 

  • Drafts accusations and indictments; evaluates and researches potential defenses; dismisses cases not prosecutable.

  • Reads cases submitted by investigator; reads police reports; determines whether further investigation is needed; approves or returns cases for more work; researches alternative crimes; reads and researches case law.

  • Presents cases to grand jury; questions witnesses; answers jurors questions; determines appropriate sentence recommendations; calls arraignment calendars; attends pre-trial conferences with judge and defense attorneys.

  • Complies with discovery requirements by copying and mailing documents.

  • Works with trial team investigators to coordinate witnesses and evidence for trials; gathers and labels evidence. Negotiates pleas to dispose of cases.

  • Interviews witnesses, victims, experts, and the police; questions potential jurors and selects jury; arranges interpreter services for witnesses when necessary.

  • Fills out jury cards; reads appellate briefs and case transcripts; researches and writes responses to briefs.

  • Handles telephone calls from attorneys, witnesses, and concerned citizens.

  • Determines appropriate bond amounts.

Minimum Qualifications:

Juris Doctorate; must have taken the Georgia Bar and be awaiting bar results

 

Salary Range:

$20.00 per hour up to 32 hours per week

Duration:

Approximately 12 weeks
